If you are doing the job, get and feel educated and feel the confidence to produce really good work.  It truly is a buzz to get it right!

The most effective rule of thumb is to gather a working knowledge of the materials and the skills required, including initial and other fine details.  Ask a pro! I’m sure they will tell you how, then make a plan.  Without one, you will undoubtedly encounter a vast number difficulties which you could have resolved prior to beginning the project.

If you are a pro, but have little or no experience of a specific skill, again, ask.  You can’t know everything.  That’s how we all learn.

Whether builder or novice, if it’s more than a one person job, collect a good team.

It makes a project move like clockwork and the more varied the skills the more capable the group.  Talented people tend to take the initiative.  They listen and act and have pride in their work. 

In the aftermath, never be mean.  Refer good tradesmen to friends, neighbours or other builders.  Spread the word for quality work.  That’s the way the industry can blossom and strengthen.
