Keeping Construction Simple

When creating, one should always do the simple things well
than the difficult things badly.

The success of any building process, depends on the right materials, well used, around a solid, practical, common sense plan. This should serve its purpose with ultimate ease, accommodate those who will use it, makes best use of space, however large or small and speak to comfort and the senses.

Creating space for humans has been an age old conundrum.
Biggest is not best. Fashion has an expiry date and clever can often just miss the point!

Over years of watching the evolution of Caribbean architecture and construction, I would say that simple and understated is still my personal favourite. A building which works well with its location, while not overstating its presence, will endure the test of time.

But let’s try to keep it simple and avoid townhouse coining on simple bungalows, heavy cast, lumpy concrete balustrades and multi dimensional roofs, with mini balconies which go nowhere!

Your dream house will always cost twice as much as you can afford, but don’t despair.  A perceptive designer who interprets of your wishes, can arrive at a scheme close to your ideal home, without breaking the bank. So make sure you get involved. Speak your mind. Designers appreciate the client’s energy at the heart of the decision making process.

Always remember that less is more. Let the building breathe.

We congregate on porches and kitchens, but indoors gets hot and outdoors gets wet and windy, so think of the prevailing winds, ventilation and protection from flashing rain.

With those suggestions in mind and the design process complete, take the drawing to the land, with the designer and make your final changes. Then find a contractor that you are comfortable with, who can listen and deliver and has done it before.
